Duke Sports Medicine & Shoulder Fellowship

 

Goals & Characteristics

The Duke Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship is a one-year ACGME accredited program open to physicians who have completed their residency training in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery. The goal of the program is enable orthopaedic physicians to develop expertise in the area of Sports Medicine. They will also acquire essential teaching and administrative skills. This is accomplished through the teaching and joint cooperation of a number of outstanding departments at Duke University Medical Center, including Orthopaedic Surgery, Community and Family Medicine, and Pediatrics, as well as the Athletic Departments of Duke University and North Carolina Central University.
 
The goal is to provide the Fellow with clinical, educational and investigational experience necessary to practice orthopaedic sports medicine and shoulder surgery. Emphasis will be placed on the development of diagnostic skills in treating knee, shoulder, ankle and other sports injuries. These skills include arthroscopic and open intervention; knowledge of the principles and practice of the physiology of the human performance as it relates to training, prevention and rehabilitation; daily management of athletic injury; the development of knowledge of the scientific basis of injury mechanisms, treatment and prevention.
 
The Fellow will be exposed to complex knee reconstruction including multi-ligament knee injuries and chondral surgery. The program also emphasizes on the diagnosis and treatment of degenerative conditions of the shoulder, including rotator cuff injury, fractures and arthrosis.
 
The Fellow will be involved with basic and clinical research projects and will attend weekly teaching conferences.
 
There are a variety of exceptional experiences offered in the Duke Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship, including high school, collegiate and professional team coverage. Each level offers a unique educational opportunity and perspective into the multiple facets of sports medicine.
 
Completion of the fellowship will provide the graduates with a comprehensive education in sports medicine and a foundation for clinical excellence and scholarly achievement.
 

Sports Medicine Goals & Objectives

There are several key educational goals of the Duke Orthopaedic Sports Medicine & Shoulder Fellowship:
 
  1. Obtain a broad knowledge base of medical issues surrounding exercise and athletic competition.
  2. Develop skill in evaluating and treating common orthopedic injuries.
  3. Experience Team Physician duties at many levels, high school to the professional level.
  4. Become proficient in common orthopedic office procedures.
  5. Examine and critically evaluate current orthopedic and sports medicine literature
  6. Gain experience in performing, writing, and publishing research
  7. Prepare and participate in weekly sports medicine conferences and attend one national orthopaedic conference.
